Despite DWI, McKenzie will play Sunday against Ravens

Kareem McKenzie has started all nine games at right tackle, and will start again Sunday -- but could still be subject to further discipline. Giants starting right tackle Kareem McKenzie was arrested Thursday night in Little Falls Township for driving while intoxicated, according to Little Falls Police spokesman Lt. Salvatore Calafiore. McKenzie, 29, was pulled over by police after 9 p.m. when he cut through a Coastal Gas Station parking lot to avoid a red light, Calafiore said.

The officer smelled alcohol on his breath and administered a Breathalyzer test, on which McKenzie blew above the legal limit of 0.08, according to Calafiore. McKenzie has been charged with DWI, reckless driving, driving on private property to avoid a traffic signal and driving with expired registration. His car was impounded, and he was picked up from the police station by Charles Way, the Giants' director of player development.

McKenzie, who has started all nine games at right tackle, was at practice Friday and was working with the first team. A Giants spokesman confirmed he will start Sunday against the Ravens, though he could be subject to further discipline by the league in the future.

"He's been a guy that's been a first-class guy here in this organization," coach Tom Coughlin said in an interview on WFAN. "The legal process will run its course; the league will take their action. I just don't think that this individual -- it's an error, it's a mistake, we're disappointed, he's disappointed. But he's going to be the hardest on himself."

News of McKenzie's arrest broke after Coughlin addressed reporters at the stadium and McKenzie had left for the day. McKenzie did release a statement through the Giants PR department.

"I spoke with Coach Coughlin and (general manager) Jerry Reese this morning and expressed my remorse for last night's situation," McKenzie said. "I am prepared to deal with the consequences of that situation from both a legal standpoint and as a player in the National Football League."
